Brief Description

AHRI/UCL MSc Scholarship 2022 – 2023

Applications are open for the 2022-2023 Africa Health Research Institute/UCL MSc Scholarship.

This scholarship is a singular award for the UK academic year September 2022 to September 2023. It is funded by UCL’s Division of Infection and Immunity. The scholarship is administered via AHRI and is for applicants whose academic background and interests are aligned with the programmes of research at AHRI.

This opportunity is open to applicants who permanently reside in South Africa. Applicants must have a high-quality academic record to be considered for this opportunity.

Candidates will go through a competitive round of selection at AHRI and the successful candidate will be nominated to go through to the UCL selection. Application for acceptance onto a MSc taught course is separate, and the AHRI nominee will be guided through this process.

The successful candidate’s research project for the MSc is expected to be aligned with the programmes of research at AHRI.

 Eligibility Criteria for Applying The Africa Health Research Institute/UCL MSc Scholarship

The candidate:

1.      Must be permanently based in South Africa at the time of application.

2.      Must hold a valid passport at the time of application.

3.      Must have an Honours degree equivalent to a Bachelor (Honours) degree with Second Class Division 1 Honours or 70% in an appropriate subject.

4.      The successful applicant will need to be in London to start their chosen course in September 2022.

Women are particularly encouraged to apply.

The Africa Health Research Institute/UCL MSc Scholarship Cover

The Scholarship will cover:

1.      Full UCL tuition fees for a one-year full-time taught master’s degree.

2.      A round-trip economy air fare to and from the UK.

3.      A monthly stipend to cover housing and living costs for 50 weeks.

4.      National Health Service (NHS) surcharge and Tier 4 visa costs.

AHRI/UCL MSc Scholarship Application Procedure:

Please complete the online AHRI/UCL MSc Scholarship application form Click HERE and provide a copy of your *academic transcript  and CV.  

 *An academic transcript is a list of the programmes you have been enrolled on and the grades that you have received during your programme of study. Some institutions may also list the credits for each module. You must provide a copy of an official transcript from the Academic Registry or Student Records Office at your institution. The transcript must be: on institutional-headed paper; stamped and signed by the issuing office.

 Application form guidelines:

1.      Personal statement.

You are requested to complete a ‘Personal statement” which allows you to express your motivations and suitability for the programme you are applying to. There is a 1000-word limit for the personal statement.

The personal statement should be written considering the following questions:

Ø  Why do you want to undertake the programme or research?

Ø  What are your academic interests?

Ø  Why do you wish to study at UCL?

Ø  What educational experience do you have?

Ø  Do you have any relevant work experience?

Ø  Have you completed any extracurricular and voluntary activities relevant to the programme?

Ø  What are your career aspirations?

2.      Details of two referees:

At least one of your references must be academic and someone who has taught you at degree level. If you wish you may provide one professional reference in place of the second academic reference. Please ensure you have spoken to your chosen referees, so they are expecting an invitation to provide a reference for you and are happy to do this. When providing the email address for your referee please use an academic or professional one rather than a personal one, e.g. john.smith@university.ac.uk rather than johnsmith@hotmail.com
